Transforming a Business Model Based on Data Matching Solutions (Round 6)

As there is currently no off-the-shelf NLP solution is available for the Hungarian language, the common practice is to use manual tagging for content rather than automated one. This creates subjective tags, tag-overlaps, non-relevant tag groups and mainly word-based tags, rather than relevant topics/themes organised in a structured manner. Moreover, 24.hu is constrained by cookie-data for personalisation as no sign-on solution is deployed. Machine learning-based automatic tagging will improve accuracy, recommendation relevance and archive utilisation. Single sign-on on the 24.hu satellite network can add personalisation skills and unlock better targeting capabilities.

Index Pass (Round 6)

Hit by state favouritism and declining advertising revenues, independent Hungarian media outlets are forced to find new sources of income to stay in business and maintain editorial independence. As access to news and information is critical in an imperilled democracy, instead of a paywall, we wish to develop a system that utilises gamification to get readers to take advantage of our customisation features, while encouraging them to rate our content, and support Index’s work-in-progress projects with micro-transactions.

ROTAS - Revenue Optimization Tool for Ads and Subscriptions (Round 6)

Decreasing ad revenues have been pushing digital outlets towards different paywall solutions for long, among them selective freemium models. Yet publishers must introduce or fine tune their paywalls without harming the still dominant ad revenues. Decisions regarding what, how and when to put behind paywalls shall not be made purely by human intuition, but instead be supported by hard data analysed and interpreted by computers. Our solution intends to do just that, allowing optimisation between the two revenue generating methods competing for user attention.

All Platform, Customised User Experience (Round 5)

The project team believe that the best news consumption experience is derived from a mix of behavioural data, reader micro-surveys and editorial curation. This better experience will help them build a membership programme for loyal readers. The existing data combined with data collected from readers using the cusomisation tools will be the basis of a new type of digital-only paid for content type.

Source Code Leak (Round 4)

Associates of politicians and politically exposed persons (PEPs) use tactics to hide their business interests, including offshore or through complex ownership structures. Only rarely, through whistleblowers and leaks, can journalists uncover this corruption. But while it’s possible to successfully hide business relationships and money offshore, it is very difficult to hide the digital footprints of these entities. Source Code Leak creates web scrapers that can help journalists trace these footprints and reveal relationships between seemingly unrelated businesses and public entities. By looking at the code of public websites, they can find clues that can help reveal the site’s owner and potentially help connect that site to other business interests. These clues help investigative journalists get information, without them needing any coding or engineering skills.

EASE - Engage adblockers for smart earnings (Round 4)

Readers using adblockers represent a hidden value for publishers. Now sites operating mainly on advertising income can regain lost business opportunity in a friendly way. EASE (Engage Adblockers for Smart Earnings) lets publishers communicate with adblocking users in different, customisable ways. Instead of forcing anything onto readers who choose to block ads, the solution offers an alternative way to engage them that benefits everyone.

NewsGamify (Round 4)

NewsGamify puts users in the shoes of a political decision-maker confronted by a domestic or foreign policy challenge. While making decisions, players will immerse themselves in a playful in-depth learning process, leading to a better understanding of sources of conflict, possible pitfalls and available policy options. As people increasingly consume news on mobile, favour shorter stories and mix their consumption with other activities, it’s getting harder to capture a reader’s attention. Gamification can offer a new narrative framework, improve reader engagement, and result in a better-informed electorate.

MAPON (Round 4)

There are numerous existing map-based applications for creating online geovisualisations, but they either lack the functionality and usability newsrooms need, require significant extra development, or their added value is negligible. MAPON aims to develop an online editorial tool that reflects the unique needs of digital newsrooms – to display news in a simple yet compelling way – while providing readers with a visual experience. The mid-term goal is to develop a tool that can be used by the Hungarian blogosphere and empower citizen journalism.
