Summary

In today’s age of information overload and channel fragmentation, there is an increased need for relevant, unbiased and high quality news. In mass media, bias is the way journalists and news producers select events and stories and the way they are reported them to the public.

Belga (Belgium’s leading news agency and media monitoring company) wants to provide a digitally enabled news bias detection platform that can help journalists, publishers, information & communication professionals monitor, research, evaluate and monetise news media content. It will work by using supervised learning to re-create the relationship between published news and the original news sources.

The solution

A single newsfact generates several news articles that often get coloured in the flavour of the writer, editor and publisher. On the other hand, readers have their own principles and values as well, often seeking for confirmation from like-minded people and news channels; at the risk of trapping themselves unintentionally in an echo chamber of their own making. Belga wants to help journalists, publishers, and communication professionals monitor, research, evaluate and monetise news media content by creating a platform that focuses on bias analysis and detection of published news from three perspectives: political direction, sentiment and factuality.
