What’s new for Round 4?
After three rounds, we have heard clearly from applicants and the news industry that monetisation is one of the biggest challenges currently facing publishers - so for Round 4, we want to focus on creative ideas that tackle that challenge. Therefore, we’ve decided to change the requirements for this new application window and to make monetisation a mandatory theme for all Medium and Large projects in Round 4. Each application should provide explicit plans for how the project will be monetised, with clear indicators showing the potential of the project to create economic value for the business.
Prototype applications have no such requirement and remain, as in previous rounds, open to all kinds of project ideas. You can find more useful information for your application in our Frequently Asked Questions Section.
To date, we’ve offered €73.5m to 359 ambitious projects in digital journalism across 29 countries through three funding rounds. The application window for round four will be open for 30 days from 13 September to 12 October 23.59 CEST.
The DNI Innovation Fund is a no-strings-attached award to those in the news industry looking for some room (and budget) to experiment. Why are we doing this? Because at Google we know from experience that the biggest, boldest ideas often start small. Through the DNI Innovation Fund we want to give new approaches the freedom to grow – and hopefully to soar.

We look forward to reviewing your applications!
