TruDat: "Fake news"? Real people decide

Poland | Project Type: Large | TruDat | Amount Awarded: €250,000

Driven by the exponential growth in misinformation, fact-checking websites are becoming part of the news ecosystem across Europe. But in Poland, a team from leading online publisher Natemat wanted to take fact-checking one stage further - by involving and engaging users in the debate.

Funding from the Digital News Innovation Fund meant that TruDat could eventually grow the team of experienced journalists trained in copyright law and well versed in social media practices, SEO and data journalism.

"What's different about TruDat is that it incorporates interactive functionality that enables users to participate in the fact-checking process," says Michał Mańkowski, Editor-in-Chief. "We take a topical news story and show users what's being claimed and who by. Then we ask them to click on a red or green button to indicate whether they think that the main premise of the story is true or false.”

At the bottom of a page, Trudat show the real facts and reveal if the user was right or wrong. They can then share or retweet the summary about the topic in question - and they can even see what a journalist is working on at that moment and suggest subjects that deserve investigation, for example by sending them a link to a photograph or meme.

"Although TruDat only went live in 2018, we've already made a real difference to the Polish public's understanding of a wide range of issues, exposing the lies and spin of fake news. We can't make it disappear, but we can counteract and neutralise it."
