Engaging school students in current affairs, NUSHU uses Augmented Reality (AR) storytelling to transform journalism for 8-12-year-olds.
“Kids are interested in the world and what’s going on around them,” Minushu Founder and journalist Eva Domínguez explains. “They just need the right tools.” NUSHU is designed to be one of those tools – a combination of interactive narrative and gaming. It creates a narrative on printed pages which is then augmented by the use of a mobile app to bring the adventures of the characters to life. Children explore current affairs topics such as the impact of pollution on insect populations. “Kids point their phones at the comics and watch in awe as the stories unravel. The way children explain the most difficult topics after using NUSHU is amazing,” adds Domínguez.
In 2018, interest from Finland’s Education Alliance presented an opportunity to move this news app into the education sector and in 2019 the organisation was recognised as one of the 100 most innovative educational ideas worldwide by the Finnish independent education organisation HundrED. NUSHU has now reached 7,200 students worldwide, with 17% paying for access. Schools buy a yearly subscription, in the same way they subscribe to other publications. “There’s much more interest in digital platforms and Augmented Reality than ever before,” says Domínguez.
