YouTube and the news industry
As part of the Google News Initiative, YouTube is working to support the future of news in online video.
This year, YouTube and the Google News Initiative are launching a new cohort-based program: The Sustainability Lab. Through this lab, YouTube and the GNI will work closely with news organizations around the world to accelerate innovative ideas related to financial sustainability for video news. Organizations may apply for three cohorts: (1) advertising revenue, (2) user revenue, and (3) cost savings. Selected newsrooms will receive funding to build their idea, while learning from and collaborating with a cohort of other newsrooms around the world. After the lab is completed, YouTube will share the learnings generated from the projects with the broader industry through comprehensive playbooks designed to be applicable for newsrooms at large.
We’re committed to working with news organizations from around the world to build sustainable video newsrooms. In 2018-2019, GNI YouTube Innovation Funding supported 87 news organizations from 23 countries, empowering them to strengthen their online video capabilities and experiment with new formats for video journalism.
