Lab content

The GNI Startups Lab is a program developed by Google that has been carried out in various regions of the world. This new edition is complemented by the training experiences of SembraMedia and the federal presence of FOPEA.

The incubator includes training, mentoring and exchanges with specialists in which knowledge about quality content, audience development, business models and other fundamental topics for the sustainability of a medium will be deepened, in addition to the fulfillment of the journalistic mission within a framework of ethical responsibility.

At the end of the program, participants will have a Minimum Viable Product (MVP) ready to be launched.

Since the first edition of the program, more than 50 new media or journalistic startups have emerged. Its founders come from different backgrounds: they are professional journalists, socially committed citizens or entrepreneurs, and since the completion of the training they have begun to change the narrative of reality in their countries.

Information deserts

This new edition focuses on Argentine journalism and is based on the research carried out between 2020 and 2021 by FOPEA and GNI on "news deserts," the name given to areas where there are no media outlets or where those that do exist exhibit extreme dependence on power and there are no conditions to practice local journalism. According to this research, 47.9% of the 560 regions that make up Argentina are news deserts.
