Often we care more about the embezzlement of few thousand dollars than a million dollar fraud. It is hard to imagine big numbers when they’re not present in our everyday lives. Media is the primary source of the information we receive about our broader community, our country or the world. The news we read influences our everyday decisions. Besides being committed to valid, impartial and well founded reporting, providing information and especially numbers and complex relations in a digestible way must be an ultimate goal for news portals.
Political influence, oligarchism, favouritism and tax evasion became very common in Hungary’s media landscape in parallel with the political changes. We would like to see clearly the connections between political links and revenues, profitability and market shares for analysis and policy making purposes.
Journalists sometimes change the originally published texts and this way they intend to correct unintentional errors and mistakes without being noticed by the public. There are cases, however, when journalists, publish fake information, false accusations, manipulated statements and are obliged to make corrections to avoid legal consequences. The new text-comparison tool "Stealth Fighter" and its content-feed system will reveal stealth edits of the monitored news sites on a daily basis. It will also provide statistics which will allow to do research, compile listings and ratings about performance." Stealth Fighter" is a tool to strengthen ethical journalism in Hungary.
Often we come across stories that would be really interesting to cover but we lack the resources to do them: projects that are expensive, those involving travel, extended video production or many working hours of research. All these projects are exciting journalistically speaking, they would not prove efficient in a cost-benefit analysis. They would bring back a fraction of the production costs, while their societal benefits could be tremendous. Finding sponsors is an option but with many drawbacks. A custom built crowdfunding platform would enable us to raise money for such projects and greatly extend the capabilities of our coverage.
