French online media outlets faced a challenge when the government passed a "3-click" termination law, making it easier for customers to cancel contracts. Instead of viewing the law as a threat, Le Monde used it as an opportunity to improve their customer experience. By overhauling their unsubscribe process, Le Monde simplified the cancellation journey for users and simultaneously gathered valuable data on why subscribers were leaving. They used this data to create a new retention strategy, offering personalized incentives like temporary subscription pauses, content suggestions, and special pricing offers. This new approach turned the unsubscribe process into a key customer engagement tool. As a result, Le Monde saw a surprising reduction in churn, an increase in active subscriptions, and a longer average subscription life, proving that a user-friendly exit can lead to greater loyalty.
