Empowered youth in Yogyakarta through journalism

Empowered younger citizens in Yogyakarta to share stories through journalism and gained 60% growth in total unique visitors on the website

The Challenge

Wiradesa is a free news platform that shares village issues, and its revenue stream relies on ads.

The Solution

A news and media startup that aims to provide relevant information for local villages and rural communities. Wiradesa created an online learning platform called Sekolah Jurnalisme Desa (SJD), based on learnings from the Google News Initiative Startup Lab to train young community members to become citizen journalists whose work can then become published. This enabled Wiradesa to tap into the youth audience segment and gained a 60% growth in total unique visitors on the website.

59.019 users in Sept 2022
87.376 users by Jan 2023 on their website alone (+48%)
Wiradesa not only gained knowledge, education, and inspiration in managing the digital world in this era. But also about behavior, mindset about respecting time, other people's opinions, being open-minded, and acting professionally which underlies the development of our current digital media.
